How much does it cost to change a filling

Filling is the simplest and most common way to restore the integrity of a decayed tooth. This procedure is almost always followed by treatment of tooth decay. But over time, the filling material wears out. There are also premature destruction of the filling due to poor quality treatment, ill-advised composition, etc. In such a situation, it is reasonable to replace the old construction with a new one. The dentist will extract the damaged material and fill the cavity with a fresh one, thus restoring the aesthetics and functionality of the tooth.

Reasons for replacement

There are many indications for replacing a filling. First of all, these are:

  • partial or complete destruction of the old composition – in such a situation the development of caries is almost inevitable;
  • The seal of the filling material is broken – the filling has ‘pulled away’ from the tooth tissue and now fits loosely;
  • ‘overhanging’ of the filling over the gum tissue – the problem is accompanied by local inflammation, pain, bleeding and other consequences;
  • severe wear and tear of the material – the filling has simply worn off, causing a change in the bite height;
  • unsatisfactory color or shape – the patient is not satisfied with the result of the previous treatment and wants a new filling;
  • treatment of the canals of a filled tooth is required – in this case it is impossible to leave the filling intact;
  • planning teeth whitening – after the procedure, the enamel will become several shades lighter, but the old filling will remain the same. Because of this, it will have to be changed.

Older fillings are inferior to modern fillings. It can happen that the patient simply does not want to wait for the filling to wear out and wants to change it. In this case, the dentist can also recommend a good alternative that is suitable in terms of performance and price.

How old material is removed

The removal process depends largely on the type of filling composition:

  • cements and composites – silicophosphate and zinc phosphate compositions are considered to be among the most durable. They can be removed by drilling with a drill and small bits;
  • pastes – such compositions can be conveniently removed with special solvents and a drill with extended nozzles;
  • amalgam – metal alloy fillings are removed in the following way: first, a cross-shaped incision is made, and then the particles from it are removed with a milling cutter.

The procedure is completed by qualitative cleaning of the cavity from carious lesions and fixation of a new filling.

How long a filling can last

The length of service depends on many factors:

  • correctly performed filling and selected size;
  • material strength;
  • the condition of the supporting tooth, its wall thickness;
  • having bad habits, eating very hard food, etc.

Usually, a filling lasts for 3-5 years. Good fillings can last for 10 years or more, but sooner or later they will have to be replaced.

How to extend the service life of the filling material

To avoid the hassle of regular replacement, try to follow these tips:

  • Do not skimp on fillings. It is better to put in a durable filling once and forget about it for years than to replace a low-quality filling every 6-12 months;
  • take care of the filled tooth. Do not open bottles or eat very hard food;
  • Avoid sudden temperature changes in the oral cavity. Keep pauses between very cold and hot meals;
  • Choose oral hygiene products with your teeth in mind.

Regular preventive care can’t hurt either. Even if you have no complaints, visit your dentist periodically for polishing.
